So, you want to write a sermon. This is very challenging, even for seasoned pastors. So what is your starting point? What is the message going to be? What passages of scripture do you use? How are you going to make it a practical sermon? Can you even do that? You see, a lot of scripture is open to interpretation. Well, if you need help in preparing the sermon, the following 3 suggestions should help you out in writing a wisdom-filled Bible Sermon.
Writing Bible Sermons
Start by selecing a specific Bible verse or chapter that you can to talk about. This will help you to be more focused in your preparations. For example, if you have decided to talk on “Prophet Samuel”, you will be wasting your time if you look at the “Adam & Eve”. Being specific bible verse or chapter in mind can help your preparation of the sermon much easier as you have a laser-targeted topic to write about.
Start your sermon with a story that is personal to you, if possible. It will be good if the story is a humorous one. The rationale is that people love to hear stories and would like to relate themselves to the story. If you jump right into the theological debate, you have a high chance of losing some of your congregation. Adding the human element will greatly help in keeping the parishioners interested.
Finally, you want to keep your sermon brief. Some mentors like to say, if you can’t get your point across in under 10 minutes, then it wasn’t worth getting across in the first place. To make your sermons short and sweet, a good way is to try have your sermons in bullet points. Have about 3 to 4 bullet points will do.
As a conclusion, my advice is that pastors and preachers should allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and as the giver of wisdom. It is a good idea to pray (and even fast) before staring a sermon preparation will be a good idea and I believe that any preachers can write an inspired message.
