Henderson churches participating in New Year’s Bible reading marathon

Local churches will once again be ringing in the new year with a Bible-reading marathon.

Beginning at midnight on New Year’s Eve, people will read aloud passages from the Bible at New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church, which is located at 771 Lakeview Drive in Henderson. The reading marathon will continue through Wednesday, with sessions at different local churches each day. Members of the public are invited to the readings.

It’s the second year in a row that people have participated in the Bible-reading marathon.

“We believe that God has blessed us because we had Bible readings across the state and we are going to do it again this year,” said organizer Rev. Linda Fambrough.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin signed a proclamation declaring 2017  “The Year of The Bible.” This is the second year Bevin has signed such a proclamation. Gov. Ernie Fletcher also declared it “The Year of The Bible” in 2004.

Kentucky Prayer Focus is the main sponsor for the Bible-reading marathon, which is going on across Kentucky. Locally, several churches are making the event in Henderson possible.

The event was held outside in the gazebo in Central Park in January 2016, with readers braving frigid temperatures. It was moved inside this year to help keep people out of the wind, rain and cold, Fambrough said.

Pastor Don Haire of New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church really “stepped up to the plate” by standing with Farmbrough and help her carry the event out.

New Beginnings will host the Bible-reading marathon from midnight on New Year’s Eve through 5 p.m. Sunday and again from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Union Holiness Church, 1515 Roosevelt St., will host a reading from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Apostolic Bread of Life, located at 5872 Kentucky 425, is scheduled to host a reading from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Watson Lane Baptist Church, located at 233 Watson Lane, is tentatively scheduled to hold a reading from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Members of Spottsville Missionary Baptist Church have also volunteered to read during the marathon, Fambrough said.

To confirm the times or to volunteer to read from the Bible, call Fambrough at 270-313-0207.
