The High priest brought bread and wine to honor Abram’s victory and pronounce a blessing on the head of the self-sacrificing one who had championed their cause, who had vigorously and courageously plundered an invading enemy, and was at this point in time poised to return their stolen goods to the rightful owners before him – all without any demands of a reward:

“You must be special to God,” proclaims the High Priest at once to Abram before his soldiers — as portrayed in The Bible Company production of “The Animated Kid’s Bible,” Episode Four: “Rain Of Fire.” (Available on DVD)

“May the Most High God who made heaven & earth give special favour to Abram!” declares the High Priest.

“Thank you for your blessing,” said Abram knowingly, aware of the import of the High Priest’s words.

The scene, retold in vivid CGI animated storytelling for new generations, typifies the recurring theme of sovereign blessing and cursing found throughout the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Blessing for those in right standing with the Lord, Maker of the heavens and the earth, and cursing for those independent of his Maker – those deemed to be not found in right-standing with the Creator, but rebellious to His ways, even stubborn.

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death,” declares the Lord, as recorded in Deut. 30:19, 20. (New Living Translation) “ …between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!

You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the LORD, you will live long in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

How we can draw from this theme of receiving the blessing of God for our own lives — and what a responsibility to proclaim this tremendous and wonderful truth to our own that it may go well for them!
