The visiting Lexington girls field hockey team stunned top-seeded Andover, 2-0, in the Division 1 North quarterfinals on Sunday, striking 11 minutes in on junior Lauren O’Keefe’s goal off a penalty corner and extending the lead on sophomore Felice Brennan’s tally three minutes into the second half.
“We’ve been preparing for three days,” said senior co-captain Emily Devine, who assisted on both goals. “We knew we had to come in and play really tough. To just do the things we’ve done in practice, we knew we could stay with them.”
Andover (17-2-1) appeared to score first on a tap-in by junior forward Kathrine Furry, but the goal was quickly disallowed. That was all Lexington (15-4-1) needed.
When Brennan connected, “It made the coaches feel better on the sidelines,” Lexington coach Laura Galopim said of the second tally. “I think for us, confidence-wise, to be able to pull the trigger offensively and really focus on stopping them from scoring.”
The Lexington defense pressed up, not allowing Andover to get scoring chances, forcing the Warrior offense to the perimeter.
A late Andover corner forced sophomore goalie Abbie Ortyl to make several saves, and Lexington held on for the win.
