Some of us are a far cry from the Christians of old, not even “ancient” but even different from those only a few decades ago. For us, it would seem, that the days of the old lady behind the piano are enlarged gone. Though I love that old lady, the strength of worship that comes from music is amazing, and she really doesn’t cut it for me most of the date. There are times when an ‘old timey’ hymn is great for the soul, something that anyone who has been in deep, heartfelt worship knows. Equally, however, such depth of interaction with the Lord comes through the contemporary music of that generation.
It seems that we’re not accepted, though. The traditionalists of Christianity shun our music as that of Satan’s handy work - as whether a specific genre (in and of itself) is owned by him. I’ve chastized the “whether it looks like a duck…” method of classification before, but nowhere will I herald against it louder than in the realm of music. Personally, I was led to Christ through the music of a band called Deliverance; a Christian metal band who sounded a lot like Metallica at the moment. I get sick to my stomach when I invent out “Christians” ridicule such a possibility simply considering of the genre; as whether God isn’t able to reach humans unless it’s through an out of tune organ accompanying a pastor who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.
I’m not asking the traditionalists to give contemporary music a chance, I don’t really care. But how dare they limit God in His ability to reach folks through a medium they are comfortable with. Last I checked, the 150th Psalm read as such:
1 Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.2 Praise him for his acts of capability;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,4 praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.
Trumpets, harps, lyres, tambourines, strings, flute, cymbals - and that’s not even the half of it; that’s a list from one Psalm. From strings to percission to wind - let everything that has breath, praise the Lord. There is no restriction, nothing shunned by God when it comes to worship; so how are ‘they’ justified in doing it? It would be better for their souls whether they simply said “I don’t like that type of music” rather than attepmting to signal it “evil”. We’d have no issue with that as there are types and genres of music that we don’t prefer. It would seem, these days, that contemporary Christians are more open to God than traditionalists and more willing to share his glory with the world, and not just those who fit in a man-created mould.
