Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors Bible Story for Kids

Jacob’s Favorite Son

Long ago there was a man named Jacob who had twelve sons.

Jacob loved all his sons, but he had a special love for Joseph, who was one of the youngest. Joseph was kind, honest, and hardworking.

To show his love, Jacob gave Joseph a beautiful coat of many colors. The coat was bright and special, and it made Joseph stand out from his brothers.

But this caused a problem.

Joseph’s brothers became very jealous. They felt their father loved Joseph more than them.

Joseph’s Strange Dreams

Joseph began having unusual dreams.

In one dream, Joseph saw bundles of wheat in a field. His brothers’ bundles bowed down to Joseph’s bundle.

In another dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him.

When Joseph told his brothers about the dreams, they became even more angry.

They said:

“Do you think you will rule over us someday?”

The dreams made Joseph’s brothers dislike him even more.

Joseph’s Brothers Make a Terrible Plan

One day Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers while they were taking care of the sheep far away.

When the brothers saw Joseph coming in his colorful coat, they began to whisper.

They said:

“Here comes the dreamer!”

At first they planned to hurt Joseph, but one brother suggested something else.

Instead, they threw Joseph into a deep pit.

Soon a group of traveling traders passed by. The brothers decided to sell Joseph to them as a slave.

The traders took Joseph far away to Egypt.

To trick their father, the brothers dipped Joseph’s coat in animal blood and showed it to Jacob. Jacob believed Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.

He was very sad.

Joseph in Egypt

Even though Joseph had been treated unfairly, he trusted God.

In Egypt, Joseph worked very hard. His master saw that Joseph was honest and responsible, so he put Joseph in charge of many things.

But later Joseph was wrongly accused of something he did not do, and he was thrown into prison.

Even in prison, Joseph stayed faithful to God.

God gave Joseph a special ability to understand dreams.

Joseph Explains Pharaoh’s Dream

One day the king of Egypt, called Pharaoh, had troubling dreams that no one could understand.

Someone remembered that Joseph could explain dreams, so Joseph was brought from prison to meet Pharaoh.

Joseph told Pharaoh that the dreams meant:

  • Egypt would have seven years of plenty

  • Then seven years of terrible famine

Joseph suggested storing extra food during the good years so people would survive the famine.

Pharaoh was very impressed.

He said:

“God has given you great wisdom.”

Pharaoh made Joseph one of the most powerful leaders in Egypt, second only to the king himself.

Joseph Meets His Brothers Again

Years later, the famine spread to many lands.

Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy food, not realizing Joseph was the powerful ruler in charge.

Joseph recognized them immediately, but they did not recognize him.

After testing them to see if their hearts had changed, Joseph finally revealed who he was.

His brothers were afraid.

They thought Joseph would punish them.

But Joseph said something amazing:

“You meant to harm me, but God meant it for good.”

Joseph forgave his brothers and helped his whole family move to Egypt where they would have food and safety.
