Goliath was enormous! He was taller than any man anyone had ever seen. He wore heavy armour from head to toe, and he carried a huge spear that was as big as a tree trunk. Every single day, Goliath would walk out and shout at the Israelite soldiers:
“Send someone to fight me! If he wins, we will be your servants. If I win, you will be our servants!”
For forty days, Goliath shouted this challenge. And for forty days, every soldier in the Israelite army was too afraid to fight him. Even King Saul, the bravest leader they had, was scared.
A Young Boy Named David
Now, David was not a soldier. He was a young shepherd boy who looked after his father’s sheep out in the fields. He had three older brothers who were soldiers in King Saul’s army.
One day, David’s father Jesse said to him, “Take some bread and cheese to your brothers at the camp, and find out how they are doing.” So David obeyed and set off on the long walk to where the army was camped.
When David arrived, he heard Goliath shouting his challenge again. He saw all the soldiers running away in fear. David was surprised! He said to the men around him, “Who is this Philistine that he dares to speak against the armies of the living God?”
David Volunteers to Fight
Word got back to King Saul that David was asking questions about Goliath. So the king sent for him. When David stood before the king, he said, “Your Majesty, do not be afraid of this giant. I will go and fight him!”
King Saul looked at this young boy and shook his head. “You cannot fight Goliath,” he said. “You are only a boy, and he has been a warrior his whole life!”
But David was not afraid. He told King Saul, “When I was looking after my father’s sheep, a lion and a bear came and tried to steal a lamb. I fought them both and saved the lamb! God helped me then, and God will help me now.”
King Saul looked at David for a long time. Then he said, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”
Five Smooth Stones
King Saul tried to give David his heavy armour and his sword. But David had never worn armour before, and it was far too heavy for him. So he took it all off and went down to the stream.
David bent down and picked up five smooth stones from the water. He put them in his shepherd’s bag, held his sling in his hand, and walked straight toward Goliath.
When Goliath saw David coming, he laughed and shouted, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks? Come here, and I’ll feed you to the birds!”
But David shouted back, “You come against me with a sword and a spear and a shield. But I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel! This battle belongs to God!”
One Stone, One Victory
David reached into his bag and pulled out one smooth stone. He placed it in his sling and spun it around faster and faster. Then he let go.
The stone flew through the air and — CRACK! — it hit Goliath right in the middle of his forehead. The giant’s legs wobbled. And then, with a mighty THUD, Goliath fell face-down onto the ground.
The Philistine army saw their champion had fallen, and they all turned and ran away! The Israelite army cheered and chased after them. God had given them a great victory — through one small, brave, faithful boy.

The biggest moral lesson from David and Goliath is this: when we put our trust in God, we do not need to be afraid. The whole Israelite army — including King Saul — was paralysed with fear. But David looked at the same giant and saw something completely different. He saw a problem that God could solve.
David was not reckless or silly. He did not think he was stronger or bigger than Goliath. He simply believed that God was bigger than any enemy he could ever face. That is true courage — not the absence of fear, but choosing to trust God in spite of it.
God Chooses the Humble
Another important moral from this story is that God does not always choose the biggest, the strongest, or the most impressive person. David had seven older brothers — and most people would have picked any one of them over David. But God saw David’s heart. God knew that David was faithful, humble, and devoted to Him.
